Story

About the work

One of her early charcoal portraits, made “about 10 years ago”, as she wrote in 2019. A screen pirate wears a bandana and tricorn, with kohl-rimmed sidelong eyes, a braided beard and beaded dreadlocks; deep blacks frame a carefully modelled face.
